I turned 38 yesterday. An event of minor significance in the history of my life, let alone that of the world or universe. Yet being celebrated always fills me with warmth – I woke up to lillies and a beautiful card written by Kincsem, along with opera tickets for the coming season – köszönöm szépen! Matthias was excited when we told him it was my birthday, though the lack of cake didn’t help convince him. Izabel smiled her usual morning smile and thus we reverted to our daily routine, except for the emails, phone calls and text messages (including a free ride from DSB, mange tak!), good wishes from friends and acquaintances on Facebook. I certainly am vain enough to notice the commencing/deepening wrinkles on my face, but my soul still feels young, my heart fresh, if not innocent, at least untainted, unbroken and free.
In the spirit of the Olympics, or perhaps to secretly convince myself I am still going strong, I have set a new distance for running today – I had run 5 kms 3 times a week for the past couple of months – today I did an 8km track, which I intend to keep up for the whole month of August. It didn’t feel as tiring as I had expected, my body responded well to the extra energy request, my speed was roughly the same. I am proud of the achievement, not to speak of the extra 100 calories burnt, they always come in handy after the age of 35. Thank you all for your good wishes, your thoughts and presents, I had a wonderful day.
