I have been seeing the same Chinese young lady in the same Chinese nail shop on 81st street by 5th avenue for the whole period I was pregnant with Izabel – Joyce. A kind, smiling manicurist, who never speaks a word, nor does she gossip in Cantonese with the other ladies (typical in all nail shops in NY, just like the Seinfeld show tells you), smiles all the time and never expects a tip. I have been a loyal customer and they all have been waiting for Izabel’s arrival just as much as we have. We stopped shortly the other day in the shop, to show them Izabel – the girls were ecstatic (as it turns out, they also think I have a very handsome husband. I concur.) I had my last appointment today, and just when I was ready to say good bye, Joyce turned to me with her usual humble smile and said: “this is for your daughter”. The cutest trainers in bright red colour. I am so moved by these little gestures coming from people in the neighbourhood – people who do not really belong to our circle of family or friends, but who show so much compassion and are so thoughtful – I will surely miss this in Denmark, where we are more restrained and take time to show affection. And I will surely miss my weekly nail sessions with Joyce – if only I could take her with us!

Tak, Erik. Vi får lidt travlt i de første par dage, da vi skal løbe rundt hos Kommunen, for at kigge på lejlighed osv., dermed tror jeg det ville være mest fornuftigt at måske mødes i weekenden – vi kan jo aftale nærmere næste uge?
